Cataract continues to be one of the major causes of blindness in India. It accounts for 62% of the total Indian blind population. The patient volume in this service is high. In spite of the large volume of the patients; high quality care is provided to all. In addition to the greater ammount of senile cataract this service manages referral of large number of cataract with complications such as subluxated and dislocated cataract, traumatic cataract, space cataract associated with myopia, coloboma and corneal pathology and those with systematic diseases, Center also performs congenital and developmental cataract operations through Pediatric ophyhalmology clinic. The modalities of surgery available include extra capsular cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation like manual small incision cataract sugery, phacoemulsification with Polymethyl methacrylate or foldable to cataract surgeries, minor peocedures such as YAG capsulotomies are performed.
